India's most visited national park — established in 1936 as the first Project Tiger reserve — where Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, and leopards roam the Himalayan foothills.
Jim Corbett National Park spans 520 sq km of the Ramganga River valley in the Himalayan foothills of Uttarakhand. Named after the legendary hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett, it was India's first national park and remains the most important tiger habitat in South Asia. Corbett has the highest density of Bengal tigers of any park in India.
The park is divided into five zones — Dhikala, Bijrani, Jhirna, Durgadevi, and Sonanadi — each with different terrain and wildlife concentrations. Dhikala, deep inside the core zone, offers the most rewarding experience: open grasslands (chaur), sal forests, and the Ramganga Reservoir where crocodiles bask and elephants drink.
Dhikala Zone — The jewel of Corbett — the core zone requires overnight Forest Rest House permits; the chaur grasslands and Ramganga Reservoir give exceptional tiger and elephant sightings.
Bijrani Zone — The most accessible zone for day visitors — dense sal forests, rocky terrain, and consistent tiger sightings make it the best zone for a first-time Corbett visit.
Ramganga Reservoir — A massive reservoir inside the park where gharial, mugger crocodiles, and hundreds of waterfowl congregate — and tigers come to drink at dusk.
Elephant Safari — A mahout-led elephant safari through the park's core area — the elevated viewpoint gives unparalleled chances to sight tigers in the long grass.
Corbett Falls — A 20 m waterfall 25 km from Ramnagar in a densely forested gorge — a pleasant day excursion outside the park boundaries.
Garjia Temple — An ancient Parvati temple perched on a large rock in the Kosi River — a short drive from Ramnagar and auspicious for a pre-safari blessing.
